Veteran Oklahoma RB to Enter Transfer Portal

After Tawee Walker entered the transfer portal last week, there is another Sooners' tailback set to leave Norman.

On Monday afternoon, Oklahoma veteran running back Marcus Major announced his entrance into the transfer portal.

A Millwood High School alum, Major is an Oklahoma City native who spent five seasons in Norman. The 220-pound tailback rushed for a career-high 308 yards in 2023, adding two total touchdowns on the year.

After dealing with injuries and off-the-field issues throughout his career at OU, Major tallied 1,010 total yards (833 rushing, 177 receiving) and 10 total touchdowns during his five seasons in Norman.

According to Pro Football Focus, Major played in seven games this season with starts against SMU, Cincinnati, Iowa State and Texas. He played a career-high 215 snaps this season, including 50 against the Cyclones, and graded out at 75.1 per PFF. In his career at OU, Major played 527 snaps for the Sooners.

Major was at the top of the Sooners’ running back rotation early in the year, but wasn’t given any carries after a season-high 82-yard outing against Central Florida. Gavin Sawchuk and Tawee Walker were Oklahoma’s two primary backs by the end of the season.

Major's career highlights often seemed to come in the postseason. That included 10 carries for 54 yards in the 2021 Alamo Bowl victory over Oregon and nine carries for a career-high 110 yards in the 2020 Cotton Bowl victory over Florida, which included a career-long 46-yard touchdown run.

Major was the second of three OU running backs to enter the transfer portal this offseason, joining Walker, who rushed for nearly 500 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023. Later in the day on Monday, freshman Daylan Smothers announced his departure as well.

Fellow Sooners Dillon Gabriel, Nate Anderson, Key Lawrence and Reggie Grimes also entered the transfer portal on Monday.
