Dusty May Accepts Michigan Job, Off Oklahoma State’s Coaching Board

There remains one less college basketball head coaching candidate for Oklahoma State to pursue.

In need of a program change Michigan parted ways with head coach Juwan Howard to kick off their basketball offseason. This left them in the same boat as Oklahoma State, who recently parted ways with Mike Boynton.

Both programs had highs and lows with their head coaches, but both ultimately were in need of a change. With both teams searching for the next leader, the Wolverines struck first, hiring Florida Atlantic’s Dustin May, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Saturday.

For Michigan, they acted incredibly quickly. May and FAU were eliminated from the NCAA Tournament in the first round, meaning the two sides quickly entered conversation about a potential partnership.

Another program the Cowboys are competing with in their head coaching search is Louisville, who was heavily in talks with May. It was reported by a variety of outlets and sources on Saturday that May was prepared to accept a job at Louisville. Of course, he opted for Michigan.

While there’s no timetable for when OSU's Deputy Athletic Director Chad Weiberg and the program will make their hire, one would have to assume it will be quickly. With candidates like May being taken off the board, the Cowboys — in need of a major turnaround — need to make a good hire.

Now, eyes should turn towards Utah State’s Danny Sprinkle. His program remains in the NCAA Tournament, though, as Utah State is set to take on Purdue on the Round of 32 on Sunday. Taking on the No. 1 team in their region is no easy task, which means Sprinkle could be in the coaching market as soon as Sunday night if he wants to keep climbing the coaching ladder of programs.

With May going to Michigan over Louisville, the Cardinals job remains a competitor of the Cowboys, and it’s hard to argue that the Louisville job isn’t the better of the two.
