Upset Galore in the Big 12 Yesterday

If you're a fan of college football, Saturday was a great day. If you're a fan of the Big 12, even more so.

STILLWATER -- We're going to start off by saying FINALLY, Oklahoma State finally won a Big 12 game on the road. They snapped a six-game conference road losing streak, and a two-game regular season losing streak with the 34-27 win over No. 23 Iowa State.

While the offensive put up 27 points, it was the defense that capped off the win with three fourth quarter interceptions, including one by Malcolm Rodriguez that was returned for a touchdown.

With the win, the Cowboy move to 5-3 on the season, 2-3 in the Big 12 play and have what should be a winnable home game against TCU this coming Saturday.

But the rest of the Big 12? Upset galore.

I think we're start with the biggest upset in the country: Kansas State 48 Oklahoma 41. Kansas State dropped No. 5 Oklahoma in Manhattan thanks in part to a stout defensive effort and the legs of quarterback Skylar Thompson. Thompson finished the game with 13 carries and just 39 rushing yards, but with four touchdowns.

Running back James Gilbert and receiver Joshua Youngblood also recorded rushing touchdowns.

As for the Sooners, the game came down to the final two minutes. Jalen Hurts drove the Sooners down the field, but they were forced to kick a field goal, which is fine because it put them back within seven points.

With 1 minute, 45 seconds left, OU attempted an onside kick and recovered it nearly 20 yards down the field. Or so everyone thought. After further review, it was ruled that an OU player touched the ball about a half a yard before the ball was deemed playable for the kicking team.

That gave Kansas State the ball back and sealed the win. It marked the first home win for Kansas State over Oklahoma since 1996 and just their fourth-ever win over a top-five team.

It was also Oklahoma's first road loss in five years and 22 days.

Then you had an unranked, .500 TCU team upsetting No. 15 Texas 37-27. Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger threw a career-high four interceptions and finished with a QBR of just 44.5

As for TCU quarterback Max Duggan, he had just about as good a day as you can ask of a freshman as he went 19-of-27 for 273 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

And how can you forget Kansas beating Texas Tech. Was it an upset in the rankings? No, because Tech has struggled this season. But it was Kansas and when Kansas beats anyone, it should be considered an upset.

It came down to less than 30 seconds in the game when Texas Tech defensive lineman Nick McCann who blocked a Kansas field goal and the ball was fielded by Tech defensive back Douglas Coleman.

Well, one thing led to another and Coleman tried to lateral the ball, but it went straight back to Kansas who knocked home a 32-yard field goal for the win.

This upcoming week of football, all the teams that were upset will be a on an open week, which probably came at the perfect time. It'll give them all a chance to recover and regroup.

As for Oklahoma State, as mentioned above, they'll face off against TCU in Stillwater for a 2:30 p.m. CT kick. Both teams riding highs after upsetting ranked opponents, both teams looking to keep their bowl dreams alive.
