The transfer portal is set to close on Jan. 2, so players are deciding last minute to enter their names into the portal and open up their options for the next semester. One of those players to do so is Oklahoma State cornerback D.J. McKinney.

The redshirt freshman spent two years in Stillwater before opening up his recruitment in the portal. In his first season, he appeared in just four games, totaling two tackles.

McKinney played in all 14 games for Oklahoma State, tallying the seventh-most snaps for the Cowboys defense on the season. He totaled 38 tackles and five pass breakups on the season.

With this move, the Cowboys' secondary still needs a small revamp. The program is bringing in plenty of defensive backs next season, as they signed five to their recruiting class and landed one out of the transfer portal.

So far, the transfer portal has been friendly to Oklahoma State. Not too many key contributors have hit the portal and they're remaining a bulk of their offense and some key defenders.

McKinney is one of the players to enter the portal that played the most this past season for the Cowboys. Again, they're filling the position with plenty of depth through recruiting while developing current talent at the position.

Also, there's still an option for the Cowboys to defer to the transfer portal to sign a veteran cornerback. Oklahoma State will want to pay close attention as players around the country hit the transfer portal last minute before it closes.

The next college football season provides a big opportunity for Oklahoma State. Oklahoma and Texas are leaving the Big 12 and the top of the conference is wide open. With this, the Cowboys are returning a bulk of their offense, setting themselves up nicely to compete next season.
