The ghosts of Bedlam past threatened to rear their head again this season, but these Cowboys were destined for a different fate.

Oklahoma State’s fourth-quarter performance helped it win Bedlam 27-24 after the opposite was the case many times in the past. OSU trailed Oklahoma 21-17 entering the final 15 minutes.

The Cowboys began the quarter with a disaster. On the first play of the fourth, Alan Bowman threw a backward pass to Ollie Gordon, who chucked a pass downfield but was intercepted.

But OSU’s defense forced a punt and began to turn the tide. While OSU started on its 3-yard line, a pass interference and unsportsmanlike conduct quickly helped the offense move into OU territory.

From there, Bowman found Rashod Owens and Brennan Presley a couple of times before Gordon got a chance to finish the possession. On first-and-goal, Gordon plowed his way into the end zone to put OSU back on top.

But the Cowboys had been there many times before, and it had not gone their way. Yet, one play changed the trajectory of the game again.

Dillon Gabriel could not control the snap on the first play of OU’s next drive. With the ball on the ground, Kody Walterscheid pounced on it to set up OSU’s offense in field goal range.

The Cowboys had to settle for a field goal to go up by six, leaving the Sooners just a touchdown away from taking the lead. But the Cowboys’ defense held on the next possession to force a field goal.

As OSU unsuccessfully tried to run out the clock, OU had a chance to tie or take the lead with less than two minutes remaining. Those Bedlam ghosts began to creep in again as a feeling OSU fans knew all too well set in.

Still, a sense of hope prevailed, with the memories of 2021 still fresh. But as OU suddenly approached midfield, OSU’s previous misfortunes were impossible to ignore.

From Justin Gilbert’s interception that wasn’t in 2013 to Blake Bell plowing into the end zone in 2012 to a failed two-point conversion in 2018, “Sooner Magic” had come out on top in the past. But not Saturday.

As the Sooners approached midfield, the Cowboys’ defense forced a fourth-and-5. Gabriel rolled out and completed a pass to Stoops but only for 3 yards.

Bowman took a couple of knees to seal the win. OSU fans rushed the field after the game and even took a goalpost with them.

While the Cowboys may not have come out on top the most, they found a way to come out on top for the final matchup.
