Ole Miss Takes Down Austin Peay In Offensive Onslaught: Three Takeaways

The Ole Miss Rebels took down a dangerous Austin Peay Governors team 13-9 on Tuesday night.

After a night that saw 15 pitchers on the diamond, the Ole Miss Rebels came away with a 13-9 win over the Austin Peay Governors on Tuesday. Here are three takeaways from the midweek matchup.

Sam Tookoian

Sam Tookoian looked dominant in his two innings of work, striking out two and only giving up one hit. Tookoian was asked to clean up after two Governor walks, and after a first-pitch pop-up, Tookoian showed off his high-end fastball to punch out two Austin Peay hitters.

Tookoian only has six innings of work all year and hasn't appeared in an SEC game so far. He looks to be another option for Coach Mike Bianco out of that bullpen, a group that got beat up last weekend in Knoxville. With Tookoian proving he can effectively pitch against a very aggressive Austin Peay lineup, we could see him at some point this weekend against Kentucky or in future SEC series.

The more arms you can trust, the better the bullpen is going to be.

Rebs Get Punched, and Punch Back

After the Govs scored four runs in the top of the first aided by back-to-back bombs by the first two hitters in the lineup, it looked like the game could be out of hand before the Rebels had a chance to hit. Then the Rebels responded with a four-run first of their own.

The Rebels also seemed to collect hit after hit and take advantage of free passes. They only hit one bomb on the night with Ethan Lege's no-doubter in the sixth.

It was a great display of resilience from the Rebels. Austin Peay is a quality mid-major team with many transfers from big-time programs and might be the favorite to win their conference. The win on Tuesday should be a big confidence booster for these Rebels hitters.

Treyson Hughes shined on Tuesday with a 3-for-4 night with three RBI singles in his first three at-bats. Hughes also flashed the leather, as he seems to do every night, taking away extra bases early in the ballgame. He continues to heat up at the plate and give you high-level defense.

Midweek Question Marks

After Riley Maddox got the nod and was slotted as the Friday starter for the upcoming weekend series against Kentucky, Kyler Carmack got his first start of the year. Carmack's outing was a rough one, giving up two home runs to start the game. He continued to struggle as everything seemed to be a hard-hit ball.

This leaves some questions as to who will be stepping up to handle the midweek starts if Riley Maddox's move to the weekend rotation is permanent. Mitch Murrell could be a possibility, as he earned the win last night. Mason Morris has a couple of midweek starts under his belt, so he could also be a viable option. However, Murrell and Morris have seen some long relief outings in conference play.

Time will tell.

The Rebels welcome top 25 Kentucky to town on Friday at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+ as the Rebs look conference series win No. 2.
