OXFORD, Miss. -- When Chris Beard was introduced as the new coach of the Ole Miss Rebels last Tuesday, he was adamant about trying to keep as many players as possible from last season's roster.

Beard's work was already cut out for him upon his arrival, as guard Amaree Abram, forward Jaemyn Brakefield, and guard James White had all declared intentions to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal the weekend before his hiring was announced.

Abram, a freshman out of Port Arthur, Tex., contributed a great deal down the stretch for the Rebels, and finished his first season at Ole Miss averaging 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.

As you might expect, the former 4-star recruit has been a popular player in the portal since he announced his decision to transfer and has been courted by a multitude of strong basketball programs, according to On3Sports.

Since entering the portal, Abram has heard from Ole Miss, the Houston Cougars, Arizona State Sun Devils, Georgia Bulldogs, SMU Mustangs, Oklahoma Sooners, Auburn Tigers, Maryland Terrapins, Washington State Cougars, LSU Tigers, and Oregon State Beavers, among others.

It was also reported that a return to Oxford is still on the table for the young guard, as Abram's family has had conversations with Beard since he was brought in.

Bringing back Arbam would be an early victory for Beard and help stabilize a locker room that had a rough 2022-23 campaign, finishing second to last in the Southeastern Conference with an overall record of 12-21 (3-15 SEC).
