Evaluation

Dickey is as physical a receiver as you'll find in the high school ranks. The great thing about him is that he doesn't have to sacrifice fundamentals or technique.

He's a strong route runner that has great lateral quickness and change of direction, which not only helps him get separation but also make plays after the catch. He's elite when it comes to high-pointing 50/50 balls, using supreme athleticism to win one-on-one matchups.

Dickey also has experience playing basketball and participating in track and field, which should only elevate his ceiling once he gets to college. He's also a willing blocker, using his physicality to drive opponents into the dirt and open running lanes for his teammates.

The Northern California product also showcases his playmaking abilities in the return game, although he's probably a bit larger than most returners you see in college. Dickey missed most of his senior season due to injury but finished his high school career with 140 total catches, 2,537 receiving yards and 42 total touchdowns (37 receiving, 2 kickoff return, 2 rushing and 1 interception return).

He's been compared to Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown and if you watch both players you can certainly see the similarities.

The recruitment, how it happened

This was an interesting recruitment to follow and watch unfold. I first came to know about Dickey while covering The Opening in summer 2021, where he was holding his own and often beating some of the best recruits in the 2022 recruiting class at the time.

He was a four-star recruit for much of his high school career, but earned a five-star billing leading up to his senior season. That resulted in a new influx of offers from the likes of Georgia and Texas A&M among others.

He wasn't too active taking visits, but made trips out to schools like Oregon, USC, UCLA, Miami and Washington during his recruitment. What really made the difference in this recruitment was Junior Adams.

Dickey had been a priority for the Ducks before Adams was hired, but became THE priority after the fellow Bay Area native joined Dan Lanning's staff, coming over from Washington. The five-star wideout told me that he was planning to take all of his official visits the last time I spoke with him in the fall, but the Oregon staff was able to keep him locked in and even sign his national letter of intent in December when it looked like he was thinking about waiting to sign in February.

So all-in-all a bit of a crazy recruitment, but one the Ducks were locked in on for much of the process and it wasn't a big surprise when committed to Oregon.

Outlook at Oregon

The Ducks return a solid wide receiver room in 2023 headlined by fellow East Palo Alto native Troy Franklin, who had 891 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 2022. Kris Hutson returns and has taken steady strides in his game the past two years.

Transfers Traeshon Holden (Alabama) and Keyonteze Johnson (Troy) add some solid production from the college level to that room, which should help make up for losing No. 2 wideout Chase Cota, who exhausted his eligibility.

All that said, Dickey should have no problem finding the field as a true freshman at Oregon--he's that talented. I'm not going to predict that the Adidas All-American will start right away, but I'd expect him to be heavily involved in the rotation and maybe even carve out a starting role at some point next season.
