Major Georgia Tech Injury News Could Affect Pitt

A potential Pitt Panthers' opponent is facing a massive injury at the ACC Tournament.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Georgia Tech and Notre Dame will kick off the 2024 ACC Tournament this afternoon and each of them sit two wins away from the Pitt Panthers, who will play either one of those two teams or Wake Forest in the quarterfinals.

And with a potential date with Pitt on the horizon for both teams, the Yellow Jackets are facing a massive stroke of bad injury luck ahead of the opening game of their postseason run. Leading scorer Miles Kelly, who did not finish their final game of the regular season against Virginia while dealing with a back injury, did not practice on the eve of their first game in the ACC Tournament.

Kelly was in street clothes as the Yellow Jackets shot around and ran some plays during open practice at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. roughly 24 hours before facing off with the Fighting Irish. His status for game time is unkown.

Kelly is averaging 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 33% from 3-point range and 37% from the field. He's averaged 9.2 points and 2 rebounds per game while shooting 39% from the field in five games against Pitt over his career. Kelly did not score and appeared for just 17 minutes in the Yellow Jackets' loss to the Panthers in January.

The question for Pitt becomes whether they believe an undermanned Georgia Tech squad could take down Wake Forest in the following round and make their own path forward easier. Or would it be preferable for a full-strength Notre Dame squad to advance and take on the Demon Deacons the following day.

In any event, Pitt enters the week needing to stack wins to shore up their NCAA Tournament resume. But for now, they can only sit an watch.
