Monday Pitt Football QB Notebook: Slovis Sidelined

Pitt Panthers quarterback Kedon Slovis suffered muscle spasms over the weekend and sat out of practice on Monday.

PITTSBURGH -- Rumors swirled on Sunday that Pitt Panthers quarterback Kedon Slovis had suffered a devastating lower-body injury over the weekend and was carted off the practice field. But those rumors proved to be exagerated on Monday when Slovis strolled out to practice - albeit not in full pads like the rest of his team.

Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi confirmed that Slovis did get hurt during practice over the weekend, but downplayed the severity of the injury. Slovis took the day on Monday, working with a trainer while getting over what Narduzzi called muscle spasms.

“I wouldn’t say he got hurt," Narduzzi said. "He’ll probably be out today a little bit. ... He would be full tomorrow if we did go.”

In Slovis' absense, Nick Patti was the de facto quarterback one. He only threw against air during the open portion of practice on Monday, but was accurate during those short, light periods in close range of the endzone. His highlights included well-placed fades to receivers Jared Wayne and Jaden Bradley. Patti was also the beneficiary of an outstanding diving catch in the endzone by freshmen tight end Josh Altsman, who bounced back from a bad drop earlier in the drill.

Monday was just the second fully-padded practice of training camp and as the intensity turns up a notch, the coaching staff should be able to learn a bit more about how the two players battling for the starting job fair against a live defense.
