Pitt Football Not Favored to Win 2022 ACC Title

Oddsmakers say the Pitt Panthers won't repeat as champs.

PITTSBURGH -- The Pitt Panthers won the 2021 ACC title in convincing fashion, beating No. 17 Wake Forest 45-21 in the league championship game and upsetting a pecking order that had been dominated by Florida State and Clemson ever since relegation in 2013 in the process.

But the Panthers will enter 2022 not as a favorite to win the league or even the division, according to BetOnline. Instead, Pitt was awarded the third-best odds to defend their title at 9/1.

Pitt has some well-documented areas of concern that make repeating last year's success - 11 wins and the first outright conference title in program history - a tall order. But key additions via the transfer portal - namely receiver Konata Mumpfield, linebacker Shayne Simon and quarterback Kedon Slovis - give plenty of reasons for optimism.

Clemson, as they have for most of the past decade, is leading the pack with 3/2 odds to take home their seventh ACC crown in eight years.

There is quite a bit of distance between the Tigers and the runner-up, Miami, who Bet Online gave 5/1 odds to emerge triumphant in Charlotte, North Carolina on conference championship weekend.

Clemson went through a down year, by their own standards. They won "only" 10 games and finished the season ranked No. 14 in the final AP Poll after beating Iowa State in the Cheeze It Bowl. Oddsmakers expect the Tigers to rebound to their familiar, national title-contending form in 2022.

Miami, under first-year head coach Mario Cristobal, will hope that emerging star quarterback, Tyler Van Dyke can lead them to their second Coastal Division title and first conference title since joining the league in 2004.

The complete order of odds is as follows:

  • Clemson 2/3
  • Miami Florida 5/1
  • Pittsburgh 9/1
  • NC State 10/1
  • North Carolina 11/1
  • Wake Forest 20/1
  • Florida State 33/1
  • Virginia 33/1
  • Boston College 40/1
  • Louisville 66/1
  • Virginia Tech 80/1
  • Georgia Tech 125/1
  • Syracuse 150/1
  • Duke 500/1
