Pitt QB Phil Jurkovec Named to Maxwell Award Watchlist

PITTSBURGH -- With the start of the 2023 college football season bearing down, national awards committees have begun to recognize candidates for their honors and Pitt Panthers quarterback Phil Jurkovec is one of the players to have been recognized this week.
Jurkovec, along with 81 more of the best players in college football, were named to the Maxwell Award Watchlist, given annually by the Maxwell football club to the most outstanding player in the country. He was the only Pitt player to make the list.

Jurkovec was the biggest addition of the offseason for the Pitt Panthers, who were looking to replace their top two signal-callers from a season ago.
While Jurkovec brought with him a lot of hype, after throwing for 2,558 yards, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions on a 61% completion rate over 10 games in 2020. Still there are some concerns as he arrives at Pitt coming off of a brutal final season with the Eagles in which he completed just 59.5% of his passes for 1,711 yards, 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games.
He'll reunite with former position coach and play-caller, Frank Cignetti, and improved offensive line play relative to what was in front of him at Boston College should help him improve in 2023.
