WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — No. 5 Purdue basketball lost to No. 17 Indiana on Saturday night at Mackey Arena, falling to 24-5 on the season and 13-5 in Big Ten play.
The Boilermakers were led by junior center Zach Edey, who scored 26 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, and the team held Hoosiers forward Trayce Jackson-Davis to just 10 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the game.
But freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino posted a season-high 35 points on 14-of-24 shooting as Indiana shot 50.8 percent from the floor in the matchup. Purdue shot just 34.9 percent and went 5-of-23 from the 3-point line.
"If you told me that he would've had 10 and eight, I would think we would be sitting pretty," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "It kind of shows you how dangerous Indiana can be with that one-two combo there with Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jalen Hood-Schifino."
The Boilermakers had early control of the game and never trailed in the first half but were never able to pull away before halftime. Hood-Schifino had 23 points at the break, but a 3-pointer from junior guard Brandon Newman gave Purdue a 38-34 lead going into the second half.
The Hoosiers turned things around with a deciding 17-2 run in the early minutes of the final period and never looked back. Indiana junior guard Trey Galloway sparked the scoring surge with a 3-pointer and went on to score eight points during the stretch.
Galloway and senior forward Miller Kopp each posted 13 points and combined for six 3-pointers in the contest.
Purdue cits its deficit to as little as five points after Indiana's run but never again took the lead. Aside from Edey, freshman guard Fletcher Loyer was the only other Boilermaker to score in double figures. He had 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting.
The team outrebounded the Hoosiers by a 46-30 margin and shot 22-of-33 from the free-throw line by the end of the game.
