1st quarter

3:59 — This isn't a good early sign for Purdue's defense. Illinois has converted a pair of 3rd-down opportunities. Opponents are converting on that down more than 51% of the time against Purdue this season. In a game like this, the Boilermakers have to get the Fighting Illini off the field.

5:19 — Purdue forced Illinois into a 3rd-and-5 on its first drive, but Katin Houser connected with Collin Dixon for 15 yards to keep the offense on the field.

6:48 — Purdue 3, Illinois 0. The Boilermaker offense was rolling on that drive, but a false start on a third down from inside the Illini 10-yard line followed by an incomplete pass by Ryan Browne forces Purdue to a field goal. Jacobo Echeverria Lozano converts and the Boilers take an early lead. It was a good drive — 15 plays for 64 yards and more than 8 minutes — but Purdue would have loved a touchdown.

That was a productive drive for Fame Ijeboi, totaling 35 yards on 7 carries. A good start for the Boilermaker run game.

9:02 — Illinois is flagged for illegal hands to the face, which gives Purdue a first down at the Illinois 11-yard line. Big mistake for the Fighting Illini and the Boilers are knocking on the door of the end zone.

10:20 — Ryan Browne completes a pass to Chauncey Magwood on third down to keep the offense on the field. Huge conversion early for the Purdue offense.

12:40 — Purdue is doing a nice job trying to establish the run early today. Fame Ijeboi already with three carries for 26 yards. The Boilermakers have a pair of first downs to start the contest.

Pregame

  • We're about 20 minutes from kickoff and the band is on the field here in Champaign. Fans are filling in.
  • Some significant injury news for Purdue. The Boilermakers will be without starting right tackle Jude McCoskey and defensive end Elo Modozie. Both were questionable early this week. Joey Tanona and Mister Clark remain out for Saturday's contest.
  • It's a beautiful afternoon in Champaign. The sky is blue and there isn't a cloud in sight. Temperatures are reaching 70 degrees with a slight breeze. It's an awesome October day for college football.

What's at stake

Purdue Boilermakers

The Boilers are trying to snap a 23-game losing streak to Power Four opponents. It's no secret that Purdue hasn't won a game against a Big Ten team since a victory over Indiana in November 2023. A win on Saturday over Illinois would be significant for this program.

It's also the start of an important month for the Boilermakers, with games against Illinois, Minnesota, Washington and Penn State on the schedule. If Barry Odom's squad can pick up a win in Champaign, perhaps it changes the trajectory of the 2026 season for the team.

Illinois Fighting Illini

Bret Bielema has enjoyed plenty of success since his arrival at Illinois, but the Fighting Illini sit at 2-2 on the season and aren't happy with the start. Returning home to snag a win over a rival after getting thumped by Ohio State last weekend would be a nice boost of confidence.

Illinois has also enjoyed recent success against Purdue. The Fighting Illini have won the last two meetings against the Boilermakers, and would love to keep the cannon trophy in Champaign for at least another season.
