DALLAS – A member of the SMU football team has been suspended after being charged with eight felony counts for his involvement in a March 30 multi-vehicle crash on a Dallas expressway that sent two people to the hospital.

Teddy Knox, a junior who played at The Woodlands High School and transferred to SMU from Mississippi State, received the same charges as Kansas City WR Rashee Rice. The charges include one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury, and six counts of collision involving injury.

"SMU has been notified by Dallas Police of an arrest warrant for Theodore "Teddy" Knox, a student-athlete on the Mustang football team. Knox has been suspended from the team. SMU takes these allegations seriously. Federal student privacy laws prevent the university from discussing details involving student disciplinary proceedings," the school said in a statement.

Knox is alleged to be the driver of the Chevrolet Corvette involved in the accident. Rice, a former SMU receiver, has admitted to driving the Lamborghini involved in the accident.

Collision involving injury carries a penalty of imprisonment in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice for not more than five years or confinement in the county jail for not more than one year, a fine not to exceed $5,000, or both.

Collision involving serious bodily injury is a third-degree felony and carries a punishment of imprisonment of not more than 10 years or less than two years.

Aggravated assault is a second-degree felony, is punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.

"We have fully cooperated with law enforcement," Knox's attorney, Deandra Grant told WFAA. "Other than that we have no further comment at this time."

Neither Knox nor Rice have surrendered to law enforcement officials.

Rice is reported to be the owner of the Corvette and rented the Lamborghini. The accident occurred after the Lamborghini collided with the median wall and crashed into other cars on US 75. Six vehicles in all were involved in the accident.

Knox transferred to SMU after the 2021 season after playing in only three games for Mississippi State. Knox had four catches during the 2022 season and, after moving to cornerback, registered four tackles in 2023.
