Dowell Loggains Discusses The Growth Of Spencer Rattler
South Carolina's new offensive coordinator in Dowell Loggains has only been Columbia for around four months now, but in this short period of time, he and the Gamecocks' star quarterback, Spencer Rattler, have already built a strong comfort level amongst each other when it comes to running what's widely expected to be a more simplified offense. This bond between play-caller and gunslinger has caused Rattler to personally bear more responsibility with the offense while simultaneously becoming more inquisitive about what he could do, something that's caught the attention of Loggains.
"One thing I have been fired up about is how much ownership that [Spencer] has taken with everything. He's like 'Hey what about this? What about that? Can we do that?' and [I'm] like 'Hey, you may be ready to do that, but we got to get the other ten guys on the same page playing to your speed right now.' So that's been exciting and that process has been a lot of fun going through it with him," Loggains explained.
This synchronicity that Dowell Loggains wants to see is something that this offense lacked for the majority of the 2022 season, whether it was the offensive line missing a blitz pickup, Spencer Rattler leaving the pocket to early, or not all eleven players knowing what the play-call was. This is a concept that the Gamecocks new play-caller and Rattler have discussed throughout the Spring, with coach Dowell noting a specific quote he used with the Arizona native during one practice.
"You're an artist, not a blacksmith. Paint the canvas however you want to paint it, but you gotta make sure the protection ties into the route and [vice versa]," Loggains recalled. "You gotta get the other ten guys on the same page."
Gamecock fans will get a small glimpse of just how much Spencer Rattler and Dowell Loggains are on the same page when South Carolina plays their Spring game on Saturday night.
