OPINION: Three Candidates To Fill In South Carolina's Interior DL Coaching Role

South Carolina's Football program is in search of a new interior defensive line coach, and there's a few candidates that make sense.

South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer is about to begin a search for a new interior defensive line coach, as it was first reported early Friday morning by On3's Matt Zenitz that South Carolina Defensive Tackle coach Jimmy Lindsey was taking the same role with the LSU Tigers. Lindsey is the second on-field assistant coach to leave this offseason, with other coach being former offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield, who took the same job at Nebraska this past November.

Connecting the dots on former connections of both Shane Beamer and Gamecock defensive coordinator Clayton White, these are three coaches that I think could be worth keeping an eye on in this search.

Tulane DL Coach Travian Roberston

For people who have been following South Carolina Football for a long time, this name is likely one you'll instantly recognize. Robertson played at South Carolina between 2007 and 2011, being a team captain his senior season and then playing in the NFL for three seasons.

Shane Beamer was an assistant coach on the Gamecocks staff for Robertson's first four seasons in Columbia and thus is very familiar with the North Carolina native. Travian knows the program like the back of his hand and this would be a move widely celebrated amongst the fanbase.

UCF DT Coach Kenny Martin

Martin doesn't have any direct connection to the South Carolina Gamecocks Football program, but has previously served as a coach under the guise of defensive coordinator Clayton White at Western Kentucky. Continuity and a deep understanding of what a football program's head coach and coordinators want to run schematically are extremely important on a coaching staff, and Kenny would check off that important box.

SMU DL Coach Calvin Thibodeaux

This coach is probably the biggest "longshot" out of all of the candidates listed here, but you truly never know what can happen with a coaching search. Calvin Thibodeaux served on the Oklahoma Sooners Football coaching staff during the same time Shane Beamer was in Norman, which was between 2018 and 2020.

Thibodeaux is also renowned for his ability to recruit, as he was named one of Rivals' Top 25 recruiters both in 2018 and 2019. The main question with a potential hire of Calvin would surround his ability to adjust to a new territory, as he spent his entire college and coaching career in the heart of the midwest.
