Three Reasons Texas A&M Will Be Playoff Contenders In November

These three areas might be the leading reasons why the Aggies are competing for a playoff spot in November.

College football fans might witness two consecutive College Football Playoff appearances by the Texas A&M football program.

With the way the roster was constructed and maintained for this 2026-27 campaign under head coach Mike Elko, all the pieces are in place for a deep run from November into the postseason.

Whether it happens will be determined by the product displayed on the field, but with these three factors coming into play, it very well could be another wild ride for this team full of surprises that is ready to show it on the field.

Schedule Setup

Last year, many people hated how the schedule panned out for the Maroon and White, saying it was easy, but that wasn’t necessarily the case; it was one reason the Aggies punched their ticket to the playoff.

Look at the road wins in South Bend and Death Valley. Add the other important SEC challenges that everyone learned a lot about this program against teams like South Carolina, Arkansas, and Missouri. The same goes for this upcoming season, with multiple tests that could set this group up for a similar situation.

There’s another road trip to LSU, and additional rides to Alabama and Oklahoma, which will be very telling about where this unit is at. Then there are also Tennessee and Texas visiting College Station for massive resume-enhancing opportunities. Find some major victories down the line, and A&M will definitely be playoff contenders, but that isn’t the only reason.

Outstanding Offensive Line

One of the offseason questions many had was what the offensive line would look like under offensive line coach Adam Cushing, who will have to work with nearly an entire new starting unit. Only one returner who was a starter is back.

It is very easy to say, but when any program has a good offensive line, it opens up the playbook with options, and that will be great for the newly promoted offensive coordinator, Holmon Wiggins.

Both the ground game and the passing game are expected to be dangerous, but it all circles back to how the men on the line of scrimmage can mesh together and show everyone they can do their job in the trenches.

Wide Receiver/Quarterback Chemistry

Arguably the strongest position group on this roster is the wide receivers, who have plenty of depth and can make any defense pay. There are a handful of returners that have already got some familiarity reeling in passes from Marcel Reed like Mario Craver, Terry Bussey, and Ashton Bethel-Roman. Also, Alabama transfer Isaiah Horton, one of the most sought-after receivers in the transfer portal, is now in Aggieland.

Each one brings their own unique set of skills to the table and can help the offense move the chains down the field and punch it in for six. It has already been on full display in spring and fall camp and is only trending further in the right direction as Week 1 approaches.

If Reed has time to drop back and sling the ball to the open windows where his weapons will be eagerly waiting, it elevates this group to a higher echelon. Every single receiver has the hands, the notable releases, and the speed, along with the eye vision and footwork to take it the distance and make this offense one of the most dangerous in the country.
