Cole Fontenelle was the first Frog taken on Day Two of the MLB Draft and will head to the west coast to join the Los Angeles Angels. While Fontenelle’s career as a Horned Frog spanned just a single season, he leaves behind quite the legacy.

Fontenelle transferred to TCU from McLennan Community College in Waco, where he played one season with the Highlanders. In his one season as a Horned Frog, Fontenelle led the team with a batting average of .352. The first baseman provided a mammoth bat in the lineup, launching 14 home runs and knocking in 58 runs. He led the team in batting average, doubles (21), triples (2), slugging (.639), and on-base percentage (.473).

While going on a tear in the 2023 season, Fontenelle was crucial to the Horned Frogs’ success as he proved to be one of the more all-around, consistent hitters. When TCU had its rough stretches, it was players like Fontenelle who provided a spark in the middle of the batting order.

Fontenelle kept his hot bat going into the postseason, slashing for .488 with three home runs and 16 RBIs. The switch-hitter was also named to the NCAA Fayetteville All-Regional Team and to the 2nd-Team All-Big 12.

As one of the most influential players in the Frogs’ College World Series endeavor, Fontenelle made a case for himself to major league scouts all around the country.

The door is still open for Fontenelle to return for the 2024 season, as he has one year remaining in his collegiate eligibility.
