Frogs In The Pros: Norrie Begins US Open Play Tuesday

Cam Norrie, a former three-time TCU All-American and current No. 1 British player, earned the No. 16 seed in this year’s US Open. His first match is Tuesday against Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko.
The US Open, the fourth and final Grand Slam of the year, began on Monday and runs through September 10 at the UTSA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York.
If Norrie defeats Shevchenko, he could possibly face No. 77 Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia in the second round and No. 25 Tallon Griekspoor of The Netherlands in the third round. If he were to win those first three matches, he could face world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz with the winner of that match advancing to the quarterfinals. Alcaraz won The Championships, Wimbledon last month. In their most recent match, Norrie defeated Alcaraz 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 on February 26 to win the Rio Open, Norrie’s fifth ATP singles title.
This is Norrie’s sixth appearance in the US Open. His best result came last year when he advanced to the fourth round after three straight-set victories, including a sweep over current world No. 4 Holger Rune.
Norrie holds a 7-6 career US Open record and is 27-23 in Grand Slams. The British world No. 1, Norrie is the highest-ranked former collegian competing at the US Open.
All US Open matches will air on ESPN and ESPN+.
Norrie played for three years at TCU (2015-2017) and earned All-American honors each year. In his junior year (2017), he became the first player in program history to finish the season ranked No. 1 in the ITA Singles poll. He also set the TCU season singles winning percentage at .955 after going 21-1 at the No. 1 position that year.
