Men’s Tennis: TCU Beats Baylor In First Round Of Indoor Nationals

We’ve said before that there’s nothing better in college sports than Baylor Tears, regardless of sport. And it’s even better when a Frogs victory causes those tears. Those tears happened Friday in Chicago, where the ITA Indoor National Championships in men’s tennis are taking place.
The No. 3 TCU men’s tennis team (9-0), winner of last year’s championship, played in their first dual of this year’s championship, sweeping No. 14 Baylor 4-0. It was the second win over their conference foe in as many weeks. The Frogs defeated Bears 4-1 in Waco on February 8.
TCU advances to the quarterfinals for the fourth time in the head coach David Roditi era and the third time since 2019. It was also the first shutout over Baylor since 2016. TCU also extended its program-record and nation-leading indoor winning streak to 21 and notched its fourth-straight victory over an ITA top-15 opponent, all of which have occurred away from the purple courts in Fort Worth.
TCU will take on No. 11 Georgia in the quarterfinals at 9 am CT on Saturday, February 18.
Here are the highlights from the dual:
TCU 4 – Baylor 0
Doubles Play – TCU Won
Unlike the tense doubles play in Waco last week, the Frogs had no problem this time in doubles action. TCU won their 11th straight doubles point. Jack Pinnington made his doubles debut, partnering with Sander Jong on court two. The duo won their set 6-3. Sebastian Gorzny and Pedro Vives, playing on court three, also won their set 6-3, clinching the doubles point for the Frogs.
Gorzny/Vives moved to 7-1 on the season in doubles play. Jong collected his 65th career doubles victory. This season, TCU is 18-4 in doubles play and has not yet trailed in doubles action.
Singles Play – TCU won 3-0
TCU won five of the first completed sets in the singles matches. Jong was the first to get on the board, sweeping his opponent on court four 6-4, 6-2. Luc Fomba, on court two, swept his opponent 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). Fomba kept his 2023 resume spotless. He now commands a 14-0 combined singles and doubles record and has yet to lose a set.
Jake Fearnley, the No. 17 player in the nation, clinched the victory for the Frogs with a sweep on court one, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
When the dual was won, TCU had commanding leads on the other three courts. TCU now holds a 32-7 singles record and has won 82-of-103 completed sets.
Next up: The Horned Frogs will face No. 11 Georgia in the ITA Indoor National Championships semifinals at 9 am CT on Saturday, February 18. Georgia outlasted No. 6 South Carolina 4-3 in Friday’s dual. The meeting with Georgia is the first for the two teams since 2012. Georgia holds an 8-1 record all-time over TCU.
