Jacksonville State Pitcher A.J. Causey Transferring To Tennessee

Former Jacksonville State pitcher A.J. Causey announced that he would transfer to the Tennessee Volunteers earlier in the week.

The Volunteers added a new arm to the pitching staff this week. Former Jacksonville State Gamecock pitcher A.J. Causey announced he would be going to Knoxville to join the Vols' already star-studded rotation.

Causey appeared in 15 games with Jacksonville State in 2023. He finished with a 5-2 record in 76.1 innings pitched. In that stretch of innings he pitched in, recorded 89 strikeouts, and allowed just 23 walks and 12 home runs. There were moments when Causey looked virtually unstoppable this season. During back-to-back performances in conference play, Causey had two straight 12-strikeout performances against Kennesaw State and Bellarmine. He even earned a save in an upset win for the Gamecocks against Ole Miss. The Rebels were ranked number two at the time.

Causey had one of the best changeups in all of college baseball. It has a great amount of sink and change of speed that looks pro-level from watching it. In fact, during an interview, he had. Causey described himself as 100% a breaking ball pitcher. He said, "I'm a sidearmer with a sinker, a sweeper, got a changeup, working on the baseball, but that's a work in progress right now... I've developed my changeup over the year, but being a sidearmer, it's the classic sinker, sweeper mix. I've just figured out a way to develop the changeup kind of like a screwball almost." The beauty of this addition for the Tennessee Volunteers is that tons of returners are returning. In particular, Tennessee will see a lot of returns in the pitching staff. The pickup of Causey, a college prospect with lots of potential, makes Tennessee a very dangerous team going into next season. It may also give them the title of having the best pitching in college baseball.
