Vols Only Need Fourth To Even Series Against Southern Miss

The Tennessee Volunteers rallied in the middle innings against Southern Miss to force a winner-take-all game three.

After dropping game 1 of the super regionals, it looked like game two could unfold similarly. Southern Miss took a 4-0 lead, but a huge 4th inning followed by some more runs in the 5th gave Tennessee what they needed to win game 2 in Hattiesburg. The Vols beat the Southern Eagles 8-4 to force a game three on Monday.

For the second game in a row, the Vols found themselves in a hole. Southern Miss jumped on Tennessee in the third with four runs, including a home run by Christopher Sargent. Chase Dollander looked shaky in the third, leaving too many balls over the plate. However, outside of the one bad inning, the projected top-10 pick was excellent, giving up 0 runs outside of that inning. Dollander pitched into the 9th, but after a leadoff walk, he was relieved by Chase Burns to finish the game. Still, Dollander giving the Vols 8 innings after how early they had to turn to the 'pen in game one was huge.

The Vols' rally in the 4th started with a Christian Moore double to lead off the inning and ended with a groundout from Moore. The Vols sent 10 to the plate in the inning, and 7 of them reached base. Blake Burke hit a 479-foot homer to get the lead down to 4-3, and the Vols took the lead for good in the game on a Jared Dickey single that the centerfielder misplayed. The Vols plated six and then two more on a groundout and error in the 5th from Christian Scott. Griffin Merritt, who had the first RBI of the inning, finished the day 4-5. With the win, the Vols and Golden Eagles will play a winner take all game on Monday, where the winner will go to the College World Series. The winner of the super regional will be paired in Omaha with Wake Forest, the winner of Stanford-Texas (1-0 Texas), and the winner of LSU-Kentucky (1-0 LSU). The time for game 3 of the Hattiesburg Super Regional is still to be determined.
