The SEC has been an unpredictable environment over the past few weeks, and with oddsmakers and analysts beginning to forecast next season, there can be a lot of variety. However, many have a similar view of the Tennessee Volunteers heading into next fall; nine wins seems to be the magic number. In their article, which you can read here, The Athletic picked Tennessee to lose to Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

Quarterback Nico Iamaleava will be the swing player for this Vols offense. The coaching staff has set the program's floor, but the quarterback position determines how far they go in head coach Josh Heupel's offense. They had a down-passing attack during the 2023 season, but if they can recapture their 2022 magic, it would pair well with an impressive defensive front and strong special teams play.

The Athletic had Tennessee finishing as the No. 7 SEC squad behind several other squads they must compete against. If the Vols manage to flip one of the three aforementioned losses, they have a real shot at making the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

The Athletic's Projected 2024 SEC Standings

  1. LSU (8-0)
  2. Georgia (7-1)
  3. Missouri (7-1)
  4. Texas (7-1)
  5. Alabama (6-2)
  6. Ole Miss (6-2)
  7. Tennessee (5-3)
  8. Auburn (3-5)
  9. Kentucky (3-5)
  10. Texas A&M (3-5)
  11. Oklahoma (3-5)
  12. South Carolina (2-6)
  13. Florida (2-6)
  14. Arkansas (1-7)
  15. Mississippi State (1-7)
  16. Vanderbilt (0-8)
