Reflecting On What Cameron Seldon Showed

Tennessee Volunteers converted running back Cameron Seldon ran hard and did some nice things, including a score, on Saturday afternoon in Neyland Stadium

Cam Seldon wasn't always a running back. In fact, he was predominantly a wide receiver until coming to Rocky Top. Head coach Josh Heupel has been using Seldon out of the backfield and did so in Saturday's Orange & White Game in Neyland Stadium. Seldon spoke to the media afterward alongside linebacker Elijah Herring and talked a little bit about the process of moving into the backfield for the Volunteers.

"It's been hard, but I've been just taking it slow, putting the pieces together. Coach told me I was doing okay, so we're just slowly putting everything together so it can all make sense." Seldon, a freshman who enrolled early to be a part of spring ball, performed well in front of a large crowd on Saturday, reaching the end zone in the second quarter of the scrimmage.

Seldon ended up with 13 total touches, with ten carries for 45 yards and a TD, as well as three catches for 43 yards, showing that his receiving skills are indeed alive and well. If he continues to work out of the backfield, he will be part of an impressive, explosive group that includes Desean Bishop, Dylan Sampson, and Jaylen Wright. With a receiving background, the Virginia product could see a featured role as a pass-catching back for Josh Heupel.

When Seldon was asked about the toughest aspect of playing Running Back, he noted, "The hardest part is probably learning the details because I've always trained receiver. I never really trained running back. I just played it, so now I'm learning the details of it." If Seldon can get it down, he may become a key cog right off the bat for a Tennessee offense that looks to be even more electric than it was in a historic performance last season.
