In this story:

Tennessee is actively working to revamp the tight end position. They carried some stiff athletes there for the better part of the past twenty years, but that vision is rapidly evolving under head coach Josh Heupel.

The staff has a new tight ends coach, Alec Abeln. Abeln has resonated with players during his time as an offensive assistant and was a natural promotion once former tight ends coach and offensive coordinator Alex Golesh left for USF.

Furthermore, the Volunteers signed four-star tight end Ethan Davis during the 2023 recruiting cycle. Davis is a two-sport athlete with high-end athleticism and comes from a strong high school pedigree.

Tennessee also has athlete Jonathan Echols committed in the 2024 class, and reports indicate that he intends to play tight end for the Volunteers. A new wave is making its way through Knoxville, and some of America's top tight ends are taking notice.

2024 tight end Davon Mitchell is the consensus No. 1 player at his position at this point. South Carolina commit Michael Smith had a big performance at the Under Armour All-American camp, and several others are creeping in, but Mitchell's body of work thus far is undeniable.

He logged 33 catches for 731 yards and nine touchdowns as a sophomore before transferring to Los Alamitos High School in Los Angeles, California, for his junior season. Los Alamitos produced USC quarterback signee Malachi Nelson, one of the top 2023 prospects.

Mitchell recently narrowed his recruitment down to eleven schools: Tennessee, South Carolina, Ohio State, Penn State, Oregon, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, USC, and Texas A&M. Alabama, Texas, and Oklahoma have made strong impressions on the young pass catcher, but he hopes to visit Knoxville soon.
