Tennessee Commit Asa Barnes Delivers Three Touchdowns and a Statement Interception in Season Opener

In this story:
Less than a month after locking in his commitment to Tennessee, Westview Chargers running back Asa Barnes showed the Volunteers exactly why they fought off Arkansas, Florida State, and USC to land him. The reigning Class 3A state champions opened their title defense on the road against Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering (MASE) on Friday, and Barnes ran wild, piling up three touchdowns and over 100 rushing yards, then turned around and snuffed out a MASE drive with a clutch interception to help power Westview to a 30-14 win.
Area coaches voted Westview's Asa Barnes as the #6 player heading into the upcoming high school football season.

A Tough Test Up Front
The win was not easy. MASE brought a talented and physical roster to the field, headlined by four-star defensive lineman and Ole Miss commit JaMarkus Pittman, the No. 2-rated defensive lineman in the country according to recruiting services. Pittman lived up to the billing, wreaking havoc in the trenches and giving Westview's offensive line fits throughout the night. But every time the Phoenix defense seemed to gain the upper hand, Barnes found a way to answer.

Living Up to the Tennessee Commitment
Barnes showed exactly why the Vols made him a priority target. Coming off a junior season in which he rushed for 1,208 yards and 25 touchdowns on his way to a Class 3A state championship, Barnes proved his production was no fluke. He was a problem for MASE all night, breaking tackles between the tackles, turning the corner for chunk yardage, and finding soft spots in the secondary as a receiver.

"Man, it's surreal, I've been dreaming of this moment since I was a kid." @iamd1asa34 told @TheAdamBWells today.

Making Plays on Both Sides of the Ball
What made Barnes' performance even more impressive was that his impact was not limited to offense. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound back also made his presence felt on defense, coming up with an interception and delivering a few big hits that helped Westview force the key turnover that swung momentum in the Chargers' favor. Barnes has built a reputation around West Tennessee for being a player who shows up whenever his team needs a spark, and Friday night was another example of that competitive edge. Whether it was picking up a critical third down, punching in a short-yardage score, or making a play to help the defense get off the field, Barnes was in the middle of it.
It's always big for me when I can show up big for my teammates, we played a tough MASE team with a bunch of great future college athletes so for me to be able to get it done on offense and defense it means a lot. And just my teammates trusting me in the clutch and putting the ball in my hands, I couldn't ask for better brothers in arms.Asa Barnes, Westview High School
Chargers Pass the Test
Head coach Matt McConnell's Chargers leaned on their star back in a game that lived up to its billing as one of the toughest openers on the schedule. MASE's size and speed on defense, led by Pittman, tested Westview's physicality early, but Barnes' ability to create something out of nothing proved to be the difference.
Looking Ahead
Coming off a 14-0 state championship season, the Chargers are carrying expectations to repeat, and with a Tennessee commitment and others already in hand, Barnes is entering his senior season with plenty of eyes on him to see if he can help them get back. If his opening night performance against a talented MASE squad is any indication, defenses across Tennessee are going to have their hands full all season long.
