As the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve and change, the transfer portal only becomes more and more important. Good teams and coaches utilize it to their advantage, adding talented players to compete for a spot in Omaha.

Look no further than the Texas Longhorns, whose work in the portal ahead of the 2023 season was a huge reason they clinched a share of the Big 12 regular season championship.

Without Porter Brown and Garret Guillemette anchoring the middle of the lineup there is no telling how good or bad the Longhorns would have looked this season. However, while they had a strong showing in the portal through their additions, they are not immune to losing players, either.

That was the case on Friday, as it was confirmed that pitcher right-handed pitcher DJ Burke will be entering the transfer portal - a potentially big loss for the Texas bullpen next season.

Burke made 15 appearances this season for the Longhorns, with two of those appearances being starts. He finished the regular season with a 1-0 record and a 2.22 ERA while recording 17 strikeouts in 24.1 innings of work.

The talent is there for Burke, and he showed flashes of being an elite bullpen arm at times this season. If he puts it all together in 2024 he has the potential to be a serious addition to whichever team lands him this offseason.
