When the NCAA Tournament regionals were announced, a very intriguing super regional matchup became evident. That matchup? A potential supers showdown between the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M Aggies

The Longhorns were the No. 2 seed in the Coral Gables Regional, which paired up with the Stanford Regional as a No. 8 vs. No. 9 national seed showdown, with the Aggies the No. 2 seed out in California.

Of course, this super regional matchup could only happen if both teams went on the road and pulled off the upsets over national seeds - a feat that looked highly likely after they beat Miami and Stanford, respectively, in a pair of winner's bracket games on Saturday.

However, while the Longhorns followed that win with a 10-6 win on Sunday in the regional final to sweep through Coral Gables, the Aggies dropped their regional final on Sunday. Then, they fell to the Cardinal again on Monday 7-1.

Now, instead of the Longhorns potentially hosting a super regional at Disch-Falk Field against the Aggies they will be heading out west to California. While they would certainly prefer to be back in Austin for the super regional, they have shown they have what it takes to win on the road.

In what was initially tabbed as a rebuilding year for David Pierce and the Longhorns turned into an opportunity to make history. Should the Longhorns pull off another road upset and win the Stanford Super Regional, they would extend their NCAA record of College World Series appearances to 39 - and make it for the third straight season.
