Former Texas DB Jerrin Thompson Transfers To Auburn

The Texas Longhorns veteran defensive back is heading to The Plains for his final season of college football with the Auburn Tigers.

Former Texas Longhorns defensive back Jerrin Thompson has a new home and a new conference.

It just so happens to be the same conference the Longhorns will join on July 1, along with Oklahoma.

Thompson committed to Auburn Monday morning, according to his social media page. He will have one year of eligibility remaining on The Plains under second-year coach Hugh Freeze.

Thompson, a four-year contributor, was expected to be one of the more sought-after defensive backs in the portal due to his experience. Since his freshman season, Thompson has played in at least 10 games per season.

Thompson excelled in coverage last season on the Forty Acres, helping Texas secure its first conference title since 2009 and a College Football Playoff berth. In 14 games, he recorded 38 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass breakups.

Thompson's best season came in 2022 when he registered 82 tackles, an interception, and seven pass breakups. He was an honorable mention for the All-Big 12 team as voted on by the league's coaches.

Auburn, which finished 6-7 under Freeze in Year 1, showed interest once Thompson entered the portal following a loss to Washington in the College Football Playoff semifinal Sugar Bowl. The Tigers lost four defensive backs to the NFL Draft, including cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett and safety Jaylin Simpson.

The Longhorns and Tigers will not meet in 2024 due to the rotating schedule implemented by the SEC. All 14 current programs will face either Texas and Oklahoma in their first season. They will face the other opponent in 2025.

Oklahoma drew matchups with Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Alabama, Missouri and LSU.

Texas drew matchups with Mississippi State, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Florida, Arkansas, Kentucky and Texas A&M.

The No. 3 Longhorns open the season against Colorado State at Darryl K. Royal-Memorial Stadium on Aug. 31.
