Takeaways from Texas Longhorns vs Houston Cougars Matchup

The Texas Longhorns nearly pulled off a win against the Houston Cougars on Saturday.

The Texas Longhorns barely pulled off a win over the unranked Houston Cougars, so calling Saturday's matchup a win for the Horns is far from the truth. Texas has a lot of work to do after only defeating the Coogs by one score (31-24).

Here are some takeaways from the Texas vs. Houston game on Saturday.

No first quarter issues for the Longhorns

Texas came out punching in the first quarter against Houston. Coming up with a 21-0 lead, it seemed as though the Longhorns were going to completely shut out Houston on Saturday. In the first half of the matchup, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers recorded 16 of 17 for 170 yards and two touchdowns.

Donovan Smith is a game changer

Houston quarterback, Smith, knows how to get the Cougars out of a sticky and slow-starting situation. After falling behind by three touchdowns, Smith recorded a career-high of 32-of-46 passes for a total of 378 yards. 15 minutes and 20 seconds of the game clock was all that Smith needed to get the Cougars back in the running on Saturday.

All eyes are on Quinn Ewers updates

In the fourth quarter, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers was escorted off the field with a shoulder injury. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said that the Longhorns' football staff will monitor Ewers' throwing shoulder on a week-to-week basis, so there is a ton of uncertainty circling around the offensive leader position for Texas.

"Arch and Maalik will both get a ton or reps," Sarkisian said. "If the game was today, Maalik would start and Arch would be ready to come in."
