Longhorns Legend Colt McCoy Cut by Cardinals

Texas Longhorns legend Colt McCoy has been released by the Arizona Cardinals.

One of the best players in the history of Texas Longhorns football is now a free agent.

The Arizona Cardinals cut former Longhorns quarterback Colt McCoy on Monday, per reports from ESPN's Adam Schefter.

With Kyler Murray still recovering from a torn ACL, McCoy was likely set to be the starter this season for a rebuilding Cardinals team, but it seems like they wanted to go in a different direction. Arizona recenty acquired Josh Dobbs from the Cleveland Browns via trade and have fifth-round rookie Clayton Tune. The pair will now compete to start in Week 1.

McCoy, 36, was originally a third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2010 NFL Draft. In his NFL career, he's gone 764 of 1220 passing for 7,975 yards, 34 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. He has an 11-25 record as a starter.

McCoy is second only to Boise State's Kellen Moore in terms of games won by an NCAA Division I quarterback. McCoy was born in New Mexico but played high school football under his father's coaching in Texas.

He was a four-year starter for the Longhorns from 2006 to 2009 and won or shared the team's MVP honors all four years, the only player in school history to do so.
