UCLA Football: HC Chip Kelly Has Plenty to Gain From Looming SDSU Matchup

A win would be a step in the right direction.

Even though his team won their opener against Coastal Carolina, UCLA football head coach Chip Kelly knows that his next matchup will have many implications for both the past and the future of his squad.

Playing against the San Diego State Aztecs in the second game of the 2023 season, the school has plenty of history with their Mountain West opponent and the city of San Diego itself.

This will be UCLA’s first game in San Diego since 2005. The Bruins were supposed to have played North Carolina State in the 2021 Holiday Bowl at Petco Park but pulled out several hours before kickoff, citing COVID-19 concerns.

In their current matchup with the Aztecs, the Bruins defense will have plenty to deal with on that side of the ball as one weapon for SDSU is sure to be on their radar.

Mayden improved to 7-3 since moving from safety to quarterback after the Aztecs went 2-3 to open the 2022 season.

Such a turnaround for the program shouldn't be taken lightly, but a win against the Aztecs would mean a milestone for Kelly's UCLA tenure as well should his team prevail against their in-state foe as victory would mean an even win-loss record for the coach in his time at the school.

On the Bruins' side of their QB room, many speculate who should start for the team after Dante Moore's performance inspired enough confidence in fans that he should be the permanent top signal caller for the team.

Though Kelly already indicated that both Moore and Ethan Garbers will earn playing time, all that matters is another win for the Bruins in their transitional year.

Losing many NFL prospects from their previous team, another Bruins win this weekend against the Aztecs will surely boost the confidence of a young UCLA roster.
