5 Reasons UNC Fans Should Be Excited for Next Season

The Tar Heels have plenty to look forward to next season, despite what transpired in 2025.

This past season was obviously a bit underwhelming for the North Carolina Tar Heels, who, by the midway point of the season, felt that they had a legitimate chance of making a run in the NCAA Tournament. However, several things did not fall their way, including Caleb Wilson suffering a season-ending injury days before the regular season finale.

Despite that being the case, the Tar Heels have a lot to look forward to next season, as the program could be in a great spot. Here are five reasons to be excited for the Tar Heels' chances.

1. Incoming Recruits

While North Carolina is slated to lose Wilson to the NBA, the program did land guard Dylan Mingo and forward Maximo Adams in the recruiting pool. Mingo is the No. 2 guard in next year's class, providing the Tar Heels with an electrifying guard who can score in bunches while clamping down on defense. Additionally, Adams is an offensive threat who can also cause problems for opposing teams on the defensive end of the court.

Installing those two players into a lineup that could include Derek Dixon, Henri Veesaar, and Jarin Stevenson could make the Tar Heels one of the top teams in the country.

2. New Head Coach

Days after North Carolina was eliminated in the first round by the VCU Rams, the program parted ways with former head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons. It was time for a change, and now the Tar Heels could have one of the top-flight coaches in the nation.

Tommy Lloyd, Billy Donovan, and Dusty May have been the most formidable names brought up as potential candidates in Chapel Hill.

3. Sense of Urgency

Over the last five seasons, North Carolina has compiled eight wins in the NCAA Tournament. The lack of success was a key factor in Davis' dismissal, and the athletic department will invest all its resources into coaching and personnel.

4. New Energy

Even when everything was going right for North Carolina during last season, there was always the thought in the back of people's minds that Davis would find a way to take a misstep. That is exactly what transpired.

With a new voice at the helm, the hope and energy around the program will be rejuvenated.

5. It's North Carolina

This is one of the most prestigious programs in college basketball, and despite recent struggles and underwhelming results, the Tar Heels remain an attractive destination for recruits and transfers. Evidently, North Carolina landed Wilson and acquired former Arizona transfer Henri Veesaar in the transfer portal.
