Top UNC Coaching Candidate Off the Board After Signing Extension

In this story:
The North Carolina Tar Heels' head coach vacancy has been a polarizing topic over the last two weeks, as the program suffered an unforeseen loss to the VCU Rams in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
As it has been well-documented, the Tar Heels parted ways with Hubert Davis days after that result, opening up one of, if not the best, coaching positions in college basketball. While there had been several names suggested as legitimate options for North Carolina, Arizona Wildcats' head coach Tommy Lloyd emerged as the favorite for the job.

However, the 51-year-old head coach will no longer be considered after signing a lucrative extension with Arizona one day before the Wildcats' Final Four matchup against the Michigan Wolverines, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Thamel's Report

- "Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd has agreed to a new deal with the school, he announced," Thamel reported. "Arizona's new five-year deal with Lloyd will make him one of the five highest-paid coaches in college basketball, per me and Jeff Borzello."
What This Means for North Carolina

Obviously, this is a detrimental development from the Tar Heels' perspective, as one of the top coaches on their list is no longer in consideration. The level of speculation reached an all-time high after Lloyd made multiple comments that never denied his interest in becoming North Carolina's next head coach.
Evidently, Lloyd will not, in fact, leave Arizona this offseason, and instead, he is part of the Wildcats' plans for years to come. With that being said, where does this leave the Tar Heels, with the transfer portal opening in less than a week?

North Carolina's preferred list of coaches dwindles with this news, leaving Dusty May and Billy Donovan as the two remaining top options. Whether the Tar Heels are ultimately able to land one of those coaches remains to be seen. Nevertheless, North Carolina cannot let this news deter it from making a massive swing on a marquee coach with a proven track record.
The Tar Heels delayed their hiring process, as the Final Four takes place this weekend, indicating that they were waiting for the result of those games to conclude before officially signing a new coach. That indicated that the program had zeroed in on Lloyd and May for the next head coach at North Carolina.

With Lloyd signing a contract extension, all eyes shift to May as the most intriguing option for the Tar Heels. Regardless of what transpires over the next few days, North Carolina should offer as much money to May as he wants. There aren't many other options that would move the needle in Chapel Hill.
