Tommy Lloyd's Arizona AD Tension Fuels UNC Buzz

The 51-year-old head coach's current situation with Arizona's athletic director could be a driving force in Lloyd's decision to leave for Chapel Hill.

It's no secret that there is legitimacy behind the North Carolina Tar Heels potentially hiring Tommy Lloyd as their next head coach in the near future.

Several early indicators of this move materializing are present, including the timing of this whole matter. North Carolina has yet to hire Hubert Davis' replacement, and with the transfer portal opening on April 7, you would think that the program would already have that coach in place. However, Lloyd, who coaches the Arizona Wildcats, is currently preparing for a Final Four matchup against the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.

To make a cross-sport comparison, this entire situation is reminiscent of what happened in the NFL hiring cycle, as the Las Vegas Raiders watched team after team hire a new coach. All along, they had their eyes set on former Seattle Seahawks' offensive coordinator, Klint Kubiak, who was preparing for Super Bowl LX. Ultimately, the Raiders hired the offensive coordinator shortly after the Super Bowl.

Another key piece in this development is Lloyd's relationship with Arizona's athletic director Desiree Reed-Francois, which is reportedly not in the best place. On Wednesday, Arizona insider Jason Scheer discussed with former North Carolina center John Henson about the current state of that workplace relationship.

Scheer's Report

  • "It's built. It's real," Scheer said of the validity behind the claims that there is tension between Lloyd and Reed-Francois. "I believe that it is something that can be figured out, but it has to be figured out. It's more important than money right now. I would say that if you are looking at money from a [North Carolina] perspective, and you're saying, 'we can pay him more,' which they probably can, that's probably not the angle I would go with."
  • "The angle is going back to what I said: 'Where does Tommy [Lloyd] feel comfortable and where does he trust that he can succeed?' I think if Arizona figures stuff out and they're trending in that direction, that he's likely to stay at Arizona," Scheer continued.

  • "If they're not able to figure out and that whole thing falls apart a little bit, I think it makes it more likely that he leaves. But right now, it's not money for him, it's not NIL stuff - that stuff has already been given to him - it's not things in his contract."

  • "It's, 'Where do you feel comfortable in your relationship with the athletic director?' That's being worked on," Scheer elaborated. "Without being too candid, it comes down to trust."

When a coach and athletic director are not seeing eye to eye, it can be difficult to sustain success. Arizona has certainly been one of the top-flight programs with the 51-year-old head coach at the helm, but the current state of that relationship could lead Lloyd to Chapel Hill in the coming weeks.
