In this story:

Without the services of reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams over the past weekend, the USC Trojans may have been sitting here trying to figure out how they lost to Arizona State. The defense didn't show up, and they seemed to resort back to their old ways.

It was a poor effort all around for the team, but Williams saved his best for last. He threw for 322 yards and three touchdowns in the game, helping to keep the Trojans away from upset alert.

“Akin to cartoon characters who step on rakes or slip on banana peels, USC’s self-inflicted wounds piled up in missed tackles, dropped passes and basic procedure penalties before the No. 5 Trojans (4-0, 2-0 Pac-12 Conference) finally pulled away for a 42-28 win over Arizona State (1-3, 0-1 Pac-12) at Mountain America Stadium.”

Per Thuc Nhi Nguyen of The LA Times

Williams showed how valuable he is to this team, and it kept their dream of a perfect season alive. But he won't always be able to save the Trojans, so they must ensure they don't put themselves into this situation again.

"Playing a whole game for the first time this season, Williams helped USC stave off disaster by throwing two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, finishing with 322 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-31 passing with two more scores on the ground."

USC travels to Boulder to take on the Colorado Buffalos this weekend, and they will need to make sure that they come better prepared. Colorado would love nothing more than to spoil their season, so the Trojans better be ready to go.

The Trojans must shore things up to make the College Football Playoff. They are lucky they weren't playing against better competition; otherwise, things may have turned out very differently last weekend.
