There is a reason why the USC Trojans are a trendy pick by many to reach the College Football Playoff. Simply put, it’s due to reigning Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams.

Williams is the best player in college football and has continued to improve each season. After dominating defenses last year en route to the highest honor in the sport, he picked up right where he left off in the Trojans opening game of the season against San Jose State this past weekend.

Williams threw for 278 yards and four touchdowns as the Trojans easily handled the Spartans. It was like clockwork for the quarterback, and he left San Jose State searching for answers.

“San Jose State defensive coordinator Derrick Odum knows what he’s doing. The Spartans have ranked in the top 30 nationally in yards per play allowed in each of the past three seasons and have been in the top 30 in scoring defense twice during that span. Odum acknowledges he could dial up the perfect defensive call any some point in the game and it might not matter because of Williams’ ability to take a potential disaster and turn it into a special play."

Per Antonio Morales of The Athletic

It was a brilliant start to the season for the Trojans because Williams thrived, but the defense also did their part. He can’t do it all, even if sometimes it feels like he can.

San Jose State head coach Brett Brennan praised Williams after their matchup this weekend. Brennan knew it would be challenging for his team, but seeing it up close and personal is an entirely different story.

“He’s just fantastic. He’s just so strong. He’s got incredible poise out there,” Brennan says after the game. “Just total respect for him. You don’t win the Heisman by accident — certainly not as a West Coast guy. It’s harder. … He’s brilliant. He’s tough. He’s a big-time competitor.”

Per The Athletic

If Williams continues to play at this high level for the rest of the season, he could be the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy in back-to-back seasons. That would put him in a historic category all by himself.
