USC Football: Donte Williams Leaves Trojans For the SEC
As soon as bowl season hits, the coaching carousel in College Football spins around and around in rapid fashion.
Taking to his personal social media account, USC assistant coach Donte Williams announced that he was leaving the program. The shakeup wasn't completely unexpected, as the Trojans are revamping the vast majority of its defensive staff in the wake of a disappointing year.
Roughly 15 minutes after Williams announced his departure, 247Sports reporter Matt Zenitz revealed that the former defensive backs coach was headed to SEC juggernaut Georgia to fulfill the same position.
Williams came over to USC in 2020 after a stint at Oregon. A Los Angeles native, he was a sizable acquisition for the program in many ways. Not only is he a talented coach in terms of teaching the fundamentals, but Williams is widely considered to be one of the nation's top recruiters.
When Clay Helton was fired, Williams took over briefly as the interim head coach. Lincoln Riley kept him on the staff during the coaching transition, and Williams did a very solid job in getting USC some elite secondary talent.
In the wake of Williams leaving, it appears as if Houston defensive coordinator Doug Belk will be his replacement.
From Georgia's standpoint, landing Williams is a plus. He has deep ties to both Los Angeles and the West Coast.
With Georgia's recruiting footprint expanding to the Pacific Time Zone, bringing Williams on board seems to be a prudent decision by Kirby Smart.
