Will we see a repeat of the 2004 NFL Draft?

In this story:

Professional sports are all about situations. It doesn’t matter how much talent someone has, if they aren’t in the right situation, things typically won’t work out. We see it all the time that players will only thrive in the correct situation for themselves.

Players will only thrive in the correct situation, which is why we have seen a rise in player empowerment across sports leagues. However, when a player first enters a league, they normally fall victim to the draft process.

These athletes get selected by a team and have no choice over it. But throughout history, we have seen some fight back against this process.

We may have another situation arise during the next NFL Draft process as the father of USC superstar quarterback Caleb Williams has come out to say that his son may return to the Trojans next year, depending on who holds the first overall pick next season.

“So if there’s not a good situation, the truth is, he can come back to school.”

This is a bit surprising because it hardly happens. Back in 2004, quarterback Eli Manning was selected first overall by the San Diego Chargers, but refused to ever play for them. He was sent to the New York Giants, where he lived out a solid career that saw him win two Super Bowl titles.

Now it seems that a similar situation may play out 20 years later.

Williams is seen as the consensus number-one pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by many. But it seems that Williams wants some level of control over his future as a professional athlete.

“The funky thing about the NFL draft process is, he’d almost be better off not being drafted than being drafted first. The system is completely backwards. The way the system is constructed, you go to the worst possible situation. The worst possible team, the worst organization in the league — because of their desire for parity — gets the first pick. So it’s the gift and the curse.”

It remains to be seen just how strict Williams will be as the year goes on. It's possible that his father is just speaking his own thoughts on the situation. It also could be a scare tactic toward certain NFL teams that historically don't have a solid foundation.

In all likelihood, Williams will declare for the NFL Draft. It's hard to pass up the opportunity that is in front of him, especially as the likely first pick. The guaranteed money alone could sway his decision here.

This will certainly be a situation to monitor as time goes on, but these comments by his father do have to alarm some NFL teams.
