Virginia Baseball Sweeps Friday Doubleheader Against Columbia

With forecasted inclement weather moving Saturday's game 2 up to Friday for a doubleheader, the UVA baseball team took full advantage of the opportunity to clinch the series victory over Columbia on Friday at Disharoon Park. Virginia rode strong pitching performances from Nick Parker and Jake Berry to take the opening game 4-1 and then the bats exploded in game 2 as the Cavaliers beat the Lions 11-3. 

Game 1: Columbia 1, Virginia 4

Coastal Carolina transfer Nick Parker earned his first victory in a Virginia uniform, as he gave up just one earned run on six hits and struck out six batters in six innings of work. Jake Berry picked up the save as he polished off the victory with three scoreless and hitless innings, giving up just one walk in the process. Berry joined Parker by recording six strikeouts as well. 

The Virginia bats were largely held in check by the Columbia pitching staff, as the Cavaliers had just five hits in the game, but UVA managed to score some opportunistic runs that provided just enough offense to get the win. Kyle Teel gave Virginia a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as he crushed a ball deep into the UVA bullpen in right field for his second home run of the season. 

The Lions answered back with their lone run of the game in the top of the third, scoring as the result of three consecutive singles surrendered by Nick Parker, who was otherwise brilliant in the game. UVA immediately regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning as Harris Didawick reached second base on an error, moved to third on a fly out, and then came home on a sacrifice line-out by Griff O'Ferrall. 

The game remained 2-1 into the seventh inning, when Virginia finally secured some much-needed insurance. Ethan Anderson got on board with a single, advanced to second base on a fielder's choice, and then scored on an error. A sacrifice fly from Justin Rubin brought home Henry Godbout to make it 4-1, which was more than enough for Jake Berry to close out the victory for the Cavaliers. 

Game 2: Columbia 3, Virginia 11

After scoring 50 runs through their first two home games, it was surprising to see the Cavaliers held to four runs on just five hits in the first game. It was also rather unsurprising to see the Hoos bounce back in the second game, putting 11 runs across the plate for their third double-digit scoring game of the season. 

Columbia jumped on the board first as Cole Hage drove the fourth pitch of the game from UVA's Brian Edington to deep center for a solo home run. The Cavaliers answered in the bottom of the second inning, as Henry Godbout went opposite field for a three-run homer, the third home run of the season for the true freshman. 

UVA added three more runs in the third as Kyle Teel hit an RBI double to left field and Ethan Anderson brought home two runs with a single. After a scoreless four and fifth inning, Columbia scored an unearned run on an error, but the Cavaliers responded with four more runs in the bottom half of the inning to quell any thoughts of a Columbia comeback. Godbout continued his big game by delivering an RBI double and then he came around to score on a double from Griff O'Ferrall. Ethan O'Donnell made it three doubles in a row for Virginia and then Jake Gelof hit an RBI single, followed by a Casey Saucke sacrifice fly to make it 10-2. 

Both teams scored one run in the seventh, with Columbia scoring on a sacrifice fly and UVA responding with an RBI single from Ethan O'Donnell. 

Virginia went to its bullpen a little more in game 2. Brian Edgington was credited with the win after striking out nine batters and giving up just one earned run in five innings of work. Angelo Tonas, Jacob Hodorovich, Evan Blanco, and Jay Woolfolk each pitched a single inning out of the bullpen and combined for eight strikeouts. 

Virginia remains unbeaten at 6-0 on the season and will wrap up the series against Columbia on Sunday at 1pm at Disharoon Park.
