Big Loss
Scutt spent two seasons with the Hokies after transferring from Duke to begin his college career. After a limited role with the Blue Devils, where he averaged just 6.9 minutes a game, Schutt came to Blacksburg and developed into a consistent contributor at Virginia Tech, carving out a role as one of the team's top perimeter shooters.
In his first season for Virginia Tech, Schutt played in 32 games, starting 26. He averaged 7.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists a game. In that season, he scored a career high 20 points in a 101-95 overtime victory of Syracuse.
During the 2025-26 season, Schutt emerged as a regular rotational player off the bench. He played in all 32 games for the Hokies, starting just five. He averaged 7.7 points and 1.6 rebounds this past year. Schutt was best known for his three-point shooting, where he has shot 37 percent from behind the arc in his career.
At his best, Schutt showed the ability to provide instant offense. In the first round matchup in the ACC tournament against Wake Forest, Schutt knocked down three three-pointers, scoring 15 points for Virginia Tech off the bench.
Out of high school, Schutt was a highly touted shooting guard, ranked No. 8 at his position nationally and the No. 2 overall prospect in Illinois. That skill translated to the college level, where he developed into a dependable outside threat across multiple seasons in the ACC.
Schutt's departure marks another roster change for Virginia Tech as it navigates the transfer portal era. He joins wing Neoklis Avdalas, center Christian Gurdak, and guard Izaiah Pasha. The Hokies now face the challenge of replacing several meaningful contributors this offseason. It remains to be seen if more Hokies will follow suit and enter the transfer portal.
While Schutt was not always the focal point of the offense, his shooting experience made him a valuable piece of the rotation. His ability to knock down perimeter shots and play within the system provided stability.
Virginia Tech now only has seven players remaining on scholarship. Here is a list of those players:
- Amani Hansberry (Sr.)
- Ben Hammond (Jr.)
- Tyler Johnson (Jr.)
- Sin'Cere Jones (So.)
- Antonio Dorn (So.)
- Solomon Davis (r-Fr.)
- Brett Freeman (r-Fr.)
