5 Key Plays From Washington's Win Over Tulsa

The Huskies pulled off a big win over the Golden Hurricane but made some mistakes.

Even though Washington played a sloppy first half, headlined by multiple drops and an interception from Michael Penix Jr., Kalen DeBoer's team was still able to pull away for a decisive 43-10 victory on Saturday afternoon.

As the coaching staff's focus turns to Michigan State, for one reason or another, the Huskies will see all of these plays from the win on film before they head to East Lansing.

2nd quarter, :45, 1st and 10 from the Tulsa 49 Jalen McMillan dropped a perfectly thrown ball from Michael Penix with nobody in front of him while running a go route up the sideline that would have extended Washington's lead to 29-3 just before halftime. The drive ended with a McMillan fumble for Washington's second turnover of the first half.

3rd quarter, 7:20, 2nd and 5 from the Tulsa 30 Jabbar Muhammad had a complete game on Saturday and has seemingly established himself as Washington's most reliable defensive back in his second game. Against the Golden Hurricane, the Oklahoma State transfer recorded a sack coming from behind, a pass break-up and four tackles. After the game, linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio said, "I've never seen a cornerback make a sack on a play like that."

1st quarter, 2:46, 2nd and 20 from the Tulsa 27 Playing without starting running back Dillon Johnson, Washington's struggles running the ball continued. Those issues didn't extend to wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, who took a reverse from Penix and went 27 yards for the Huskies' longest rush of the day and a touchdown to extend the lead to 14-3.

2nd quarter, 3:55, PAT After McMillan scored his fourth touchdown of the young season, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb reached into his bag of tricks on the extra-point try. Backup quarterback Dylan Morris took the snap from long snapper Jaden Green, who then leaked out to the right to secure the catch on the two-point conversion.

3rd quarter, 8:00, 1st and goal from the Tulsa 7 The Huskies needed to assert themselves following their struggles in the first half. After the defense forced a stop to begin the second half, wide receiver Germie Bernard capped off a seven-play, 82-yard drive with a seven-yard reception for his first touchdown of the season.
