Hiring a coach from Bill Belichick's coaching tree tends to be a good thing. Kalen DeBoer seems to agree, as he hired former New England Patriots offensive analyst Tyler Hughes to join the Washington coaching staff in the same position.

Hughes, who spent three years in New England, has an impressive coaching resume at multiple levels of college football. He spent nine years at his alma mater Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, using that time to coach wide receivers and tight ends before being promoted to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

He eventually was promoted to head coach, where he was named the Western States Football League Coach of the Year in 2012. That season, Hughes led Snow to an 11-1 record and his team finished at No. 3 in the country in the NJCAA rankings.

Hughes left Snow with a 20-4 overall record and joined Urban Meyer's staff at Ohio State in 2013. He spent time that year as a quality control coach while also working with the quarterbacks.

Following one year with the Buckeyes, Hughes spent three years as coach of Division II school Minot State in North Dakota. He then returned to Utah, serving as the coach of Bountiful High School in 2018 and 2019 before being hired by the Patriots in 2020.

During his time in New England, Hughes worked with two different offensive coordinators, Josh McDaniels in 2020 and 2021, and Matt Patricia in 2022. While Patricia's year as offensive coordinator was not successful, the scheme McDaniels ran in 2021 helped rookie quarterback Mac Jones finish second in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting while the team went 10-7 and reached the playoffs.

If Hughes can bring along some of the things he learned from his time in New England, this seems like it could be a great hire for the Huskies.
