In this story:

When Aaron Dumas arrived at Washington, he was coming off a big freshman season at New Mexico and seemed to be ready to take over productive role for the Huskies going forward. However, he never played and Dumas re-entered the transfer portal following the conclusion of the Huskies' spring practices.

Coach Kalen DeBoer got an up-close look at the running back during his time at Fresno State when Dumas ran for a career-high 143 yards and a touchdown against him. He redshirted and didn't appear in any games with the Huskies, and will enter the portal with three years of eligibility remaining.

Offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb during spring practice said Dumas' lack of speed had held him back.

Attrition was expected at the position, especially after running backs coach Lee Marks went out and secured not one, but two transfers at the position in Dillon Johnson and Daniyel Ngata. This is on top of bringing in three transfers last year in Dumas, Will Nixon and Wayne Taulapapa.

This brings the Huskies down to a total of 82 scholarship players for the 2023 season and makes it seem even more likely that they're going to pursue reinforcements in the portal. While it probably won't be at the running back position, there are a few areas where another scholarship body is needed, especially along the defensive line.

With about 24 hours left for players to announce if they're entering the portal, Dumas won't be the last Husky to wind up searching for a new home. Defensive tackle Siaosi Finau also is leaving.

Dumas is the fourth Husky running back to enter the portal since Kalen DeBoer's coaching staff arrived, following Caleb Berry, Jay'Veon Sunday, and Emeka Megwa, with all of them originally coming from Texas.

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
