In 2022, the NFL rolled out its Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline initiative, which aims to provide medical students with the opportunity to complete a required one-month clinical rotation with an NFL team. The NFL's official press release called it a "unique opportunity to learn from and work directly with club medical staff as they deliver world-class care to players across the league."

In its first year, the program was comprised of 14 students from the four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) that initially rolled out the pipeline initiative. Now, the NFL is focusing on expansion and has moved from four medical schools to 19, including the University of Washington's School of Medicine.

As the program continues to grow, it could be a unique opportunity for student-athletes who also are interested in medicine such as Husky linebacker Edefuan Ulofoshio. The senior linebacker graduated from the School of Medicine in the spring of 2022 and is taking post-graduate classes to become a doctor.

"Working toward diverse representation across all roles in our league continues to be a top priority and this program helps us make a tangible impact to grow and bolster a pipeline of diverse sports medicine professionals," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said. "We know that diversity makes us stronger at every level and we look forward to welcoming the 2023 class to our player care teams at clubs across the league."

ROMAN TOMASHOFF

I've followed the Huskies for my entire life, and to be in a position where I get to cover them full-time is nothing short of an honor. After graduating from Lasell University in 2019, I moved to Seattle to pursue my dream of working in sports media. While writing for the Husky Haul, I also covered local sports for the Everett Daily Herald before the COVID-19 pandemic. After being hired by Realdawg.com in February of 2021, I also transitioned into doing a lot of entertainment writing, as I work on a variety of magazines as a contributing writer for Centennial Media, and have also contributed to Emmy Magazine, as well as Walt Disney Television Studios.
