Unable to Settle on Position, Holmes Reportedly Enters Transfer Portal

The redshirt freshman had worked out on offense and defense in spring ball.

Vincent Holmes, whose past four months with the University of Washington football program have been full of indecision -- namely his inability to settle on a position with a new coach -- reportedly has entered the transfer portal, according to 247Sports.

The 6-foot, 174-pound redshirt freshman from San Jacinto, California, previously entered the portal in mid-January once the Husky coaching staff changed over from Kalen DeBoer to Jedd Fisch, and reconsidered that decision and withdrew his name.

Originally Holmes was a safety last season, making enough inroads for the Huskies and DeBoer that he appeared in four games, largely on special-teams player.

However, Holmes opened spring football this month for Fisch's staff as a wide receiver for four practices, before switching back to safety for the past two.

He appears to be the first UW player to test the transfer portal once it reopened this week.

In his confusing situation, Holmes went from wearing No. 18 to 16 to 27 since the College Football Playoff championship game.

Holmes was familiar with Fisch and his coaches, having been recruited by them as a wide receiver when they were at Arizona and he was coming out of San Jacinto High School located in San Jacinto, a desert community between Palm Springs and Los Angeles. He caught 59 passes for 1,169 yards and 13 touchdowns as a senior.

DeBoer, however, saw and used him as a safety and turned to him on special teams in big moments against Michigan State, USC, Oregon State and in the Pac-12 championship against Oregon. He was an All-CIF Southern Section selection as a defensive back.
