WVU Overcomes Four Run Deficit to Top VCU

The West Virginia Mountaineers defeated the VCU Rams 8-5 Saturday afternoon, pushing their record to 5-3 on the season.
A.J. Mathis (single) and Cooper Benzin (double) got things started for the Rams leading off the first inning with a pair of base knocks. Mathis scored on a fielding error by third baseman Ellis Garcia and then two more runs crossed the plate via an RBI double down the left field line from Brandon Eike and a RBI groundout from Logan Amiss.
WVU finally got on the board in the third after loading the bases without registering a single hit. Cather Dayne Leonard brought in a run by getting hit by a pitch, plating WVU's first run on the day. Ellis Garcia redeemed himself at the plate roping one down the right field line scoring two to bring West Virginia within a run. The very next inning, the Mountaineers took the lead on a three-run homer from Leonard and from that point on, WVU never looked back.
Blaine Traxel tossed six scoreless frames once West Virginia went on top and finished the day with 10 strikeouts and allowed four runs on seven hits across nine innings of work.
West Virginia and Canisius are already underway for the final game of the evening.
