West Virginia right-handed pitcher Carlson Reed showed flashes of brilliance as a starter as a true freshman in 2021 but struggled to pitch deep into games. Midway through the 2022 season, he was converted to the bullpen where he saw his ERA drop by nearly 2.5 runs.

This year though, Reed finally settled into his role as a closer and became dominant. He struck out 60 hitters and walked just 25 in 38 innings of work. Opposing batters weren't squaring up the ball as much as they did in the two years prior, resulting in a shiny ERA of 2.61 and an opponent batting average of .232.

Thanks to a strong campaign in 2023, Reed has been invited to participate in the MLB Draft combine at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona from June 19-24. Over 300 prospects will be on hand to go through on-field drills, interview with teams, and undergo medical assessments.

Reed is currently ranked as the 196th-best prospect in this year's draft by MLB.com. If that ranking holds true, that would put him toward the back end of the sixth round (there are 20 rounds in the draft). Reed does, however, have the ability to return to West Virginia for his senior season. A decision will need to be made by August 1st.

The 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft is set to take place from July 9-11.
