Former WVU Head Coach Bob Huggins Placed on Probation

The latest on the Hall of Fame coach.

Former WVU men's head basketball coach Bob Huggins was placed on probation following a DUI arrest that occurred in June, according to John Lynch of WTRF7 in Wheeling.

"Huggins was scheduled to appear in Pittsburgh on Thursday for a formal arraignment but that was canceled after he agreed to the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) for first-time DUI offenders."

To complete the probation Huggins will have his drivers license suspended for at least 60 days, be held responsible for payment of all court costs, complete a 12.5-hour “Alcohol Highway Safety School” class, and must complete alcohol treatment following the CRN (Court Reporting Network) assessment.

Huggins resigned from his head coaching duties shortly after the arrest, but in mid-July, he claimed that he never sent in a formal resignation and that was hoping to be reinstated as the team's head coach.

"Now that I have obtained counsel to review the Employment Agreement and have seen WVU comments about my current status, it is clear that WVU did not handle the situation appropriately. More importantly, the basketball program is in need and I have a strong desire to conclude my career as the Head Basketball Coach for the program that I love. I hope to meet with WVU in the near future to resolve the situation."

University president Gordon Gee said  told Hoppy Kercheval during an appearance on Talkline that there was no chance of Huggins returning as the head coach.

"Because of the fact that he was given several opportunities to make certain that he followed the rules and that did not happen. I am great admirer of coach in so many different ways. He's done many good things for our state and for our university, so that's the reason I am so immensely disappointed in him. For the fact that he was given a second chance and just did not perform at the level he should. We're now focused on Coach [Josh] Eilert. I've told the coach if he wins the national championship this year, we may keep him for a second year. In other words, we have moved on and I hope that Coach Huggins will move on with his life too and take good care of himself and his family."
